My latest class of beginners arrived to start their course today filled with enthusiasm. It is always tricky for me to balance my talking and sharing just enough information without overwhelming everyone in the first couple of lessons.
So if you have a young dog and are just starting out with your training then consider the 2 P’s.
Patience.
Learning a new skill takes time, for you as the handler and your dog. So don’t get frustrated if you don’t get it right straightaway. If you are working on an exercise and things are not working out then take a step back to something that you have already mastered. Keep it interesting for the dog and you will keep their attention. Remember you need to work together.
Practice
Class lessons are great but they only take place once a week. Training a dog is a daily exercise. Remember it is better to spend 5-10 minutes everyday going through your homework exercises rather than panicking the day before your class and trying to squeeze in a weeks worth of practicing.
So keep it lighthearted and fun and in no time you will see your progress.
